The devastating accident, which occurred around 6:18 pm on Friday, February 27, involved a total of 19 persons and four vehicles. The vehicles included a Toyota Hiace bus (registration number HAL676YG), a Shuttle bus (registration number UKP274YA), a trailer, and a Toyota Hilux—both without registration numbers.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

According to reports, the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when the vehicle conveying them lost control while descending towards the narrow bridge at Agulu Lake. The vehicle then rammed into three other vehicles, creating a scene of chaos and devastation.

A video circulating from the accident scene shows sympathisers expressing deep sorrow and shock at the horrific tragedy. Emergency responders and good Samaritans worked frantically to rescue survivors and evacuate the bodies of the deceased.

FRSC Confirms Details of the Crash

Confirming the incident, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra State Command, SRC Margaret Onabe, attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of control.

“A fatal road traffic crash occurred on 27th February, 2025, at Agulu Lake, Nanka-Agulu Road. The crash involved four vehicles,” she stated.

According to Onabe, all the drivers involved fled the scene immediately after the crash, leaving no eyewitnesses. However, observations by the FRSC rescue team from Nanka outpost revealed that the vehicle was descending the hill at high speed when the driver lost control, leading to the collision with three other vehicles.

Casualty Figures

The breakdown of those involved shows that the crash affected:
– Six male adults
– Ten female adults
– Three male children

Out of the 19 persons involved, nine sustained injuries—comprising two male adults, four female adults, and three male children. Tragically, four female adults lost their lives in the accident.

Medical Response and Treatment

The injured victims were immediately rushed to St Joseph Hospital Adazi, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. The bodies of the four deceased women have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

To manage traffic congestion at the accident scene, FRSC officials created an alternative route to ensure smooth traffic flow while emergency operations continued.

Call for Caution on Nigerian Roads

Reacting to the tragedy, the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra State, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

She used the opportunity to remind motorists across the state about the critical importance of road safety, urging them to prioritize caution and avoid excessive speed, especially on dangerous routes.

“Motorists must prioritise safety and drive cautiously to prevent preventable crashes,” the Sector Commander emphasized.

A Painful Reminder

This latest tragedy at Agulu Lake serves as yet another painful reminder of the dangers posed by speeding and reckless driving on Nigerian roads. The Nanka-Agulu Road, particularly the area around Agulu Lake with its narrow bridge, has witnessed several accidents over the years, often linked to excessive speed on the descending slope.

As Nigerians continue to mourn the loss of these four women who were simply returning from paying their last respects to a departed loved one, this incident reinforces the urgent need for drivers to exercise extreme caution, obey traffic rules, and remember that every life matters.

May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly.
