A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of nine people and left 15 others injured after a tourist minibus plunged off a mountain road in the Peruvian Andes during what was supposed to be a scenic holiday excursion.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening around 5pm local time, when the vehicle carrying approximately 25 tourists and their guides veered off the road and overturned near the famous Rajuntay mountain, which stands at an impressive 17,969 feet above sea level.
Details of the Crash
According to local firefighters who responded to the emergency, the accident happened on the highway toward Marcapomacocha, roughly 15 kilometres (about 10 miles) from the snow-capped Rajuntay mountain—a popular destination for adventure-seeking tourists.
Peru’s Health Ministry released an official statement confirming the casualties: “The incident has left 15 people injured who have been transferred to four different hospitals. Nine people have died, seven at the scene of the accident and two in hospital.”
The ministry assured that emergency teams would continue providing full medical assistance to all survivors.
Emergency Response
First responders acted swiftly upon arrival at the crash site. Firefighters immediately conducted an emergency triage to assess and classify victims based on the severity of their injuries, prioritizing the most critical cases for evacuation.
“Upon our arrival, an emergency triage was immediately carried out, allowing the victims to be classified according to the severity of their injuries and prioritising their evacuation to health centres with greater capacity for care,” the firefighters stated.
After stabilization at the scene, injured passengers were transported to various medical facilities in the area. The most serious cases were referred to the Hospital of Matucana, while others received treatment at the Casapalca clinic, with support from the National Police of Peru.
Scene of the Accident
Photographs from the crash site painted a grim picture: the mangled tour bus lying on its roof, with passengers’ belongings scattered across the ground—a haunting reminder of how quickly a joyful excursion can turn tragic.
Possible Causes Under Investigation
Authorities have launched a full investigation into what caused the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that foggy weather conditions in the mountainous area at the time may have contributed to the crash.
Additionally, local media have highlighted that the road where the incident occurred is unpaved and traverses extremely difficult terrain—factors that significantly increase travel risks, especially in poor visibility.
A Reminder of Road Safety
This heartbreaking incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with mountain travel, particularly in regions with challenging road conditions and unpredictable weather.
For travellers planning adventure tourism in mountainous areas—whether in Peru, Nigeria, or elsewhere—it’s crucial to verify that tour operators maintain proper safety standards, vehicles are well-maintained, and trips are scheduled under favorable weather conditions.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives and we wish the injured a full and speedy recovery.
May their souls rest in perfect peace.
