Summary: UAE warns Iran of possible military response after massive missile and drone attacks. Minister says “we are prepared to defend ourselves” as Gulf tensions escalate.

The United Arab Emirates has sent a strong warning to Iran following a massive wave of missile and drone attacks on its territory. In what officials describe as one of the largest direct assaults in the country’s recent history, the UAE says it will not hesitate to take stronger military action if the attacks continue.

Speaking exclusively to CNN’s Becky Anderson, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al-Hashimy, made the Emirates’ position crystal clear: patience is running thin.

“We are prepared to defend ourselves. We hope it doesn’t come to it, but we’re not going to sit idly by as we continue to be recipients of such a barrage of attacks,” Al-Hashimy stated firmly.

A Warning Shot Across the Gulf

When pressed on whether the UAE might shift from a defensive to a more offensive military stance, the minister did not mince words.

“If it needs to come to that, it will come to that,” she said, placing the ball squarely in Tehran’s court. “The responsibility now rests with Iran about how they want to deal with a neighborhood and a neighbor that has traditionally been a very fair and good neighbor to them.”

Her words carry significant weight, especially for Nigerians and others watching the Middle East closely, as the region’s stability affects global oil prices, security, and international relations—all issues that directly impact economies across Africa.

The Scale of the Attack

According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, Iran launched at least 137 ballistic missiles* and *209 drones toward the Emirates in what has been described as an unprecedented assault. While the UAE’s advanced air defense systems intercepted the vast majority of the incoming threats, 14 drones reportedly struck their targets.

The attacks were aimed at major population and economic centers, including the capital city Abu Dhabi and the glittering commercial hub of Dubai—a city many Nigerians know well, either from business trips, diaspora connections, or as a popular tourist destination.

The incident has raised alarm bells across the region, as fears mount that the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could spiral into a wider Gulf confrontation.

A Defensive Posture—For Now

The UAE, a close ally of the United States and one of the Middle East’s wealthiest and most strategically important nations, has so far maintained a measured, defensive response. But the latest statements suggest that stance may be shifting as hostilities intensify following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iranian positions.

Minister Al-Hashimy emphasized that the UAE remains well-equipped to protect its people.

“We have one of the best air-to-missile defense systems in the world and we are doing everything to ensure that we are safe and secure,” she assured. “We are in a safe place that has very strong infrastructure. We will leave no stone unturned to make sure that continues to be the case for all of our citizens and residents alike.”

What This Means for the Region—and Beyond

For many Nigerians with business interests, family members, or investments in the UAE, this escalation is deeply concerning. The UAE hosts one of the largest Nigerian diaspora communities in the Middle East, and any prolonged conflict could disrupt livelihoods, trade, and travel.

Moreover, the Gulf region’s stability is crucial for global oil markets. Nigeria, as an oil-producing nation itself, is sensitive to any disruptions that could affect crude prices or shift the balance of power among OPEC members.

The coming days will be critical. Will Iran heed the UAE’s warning and de-escalate, or will the Gulf be drawn further into the flames of a widening Middle Eastern conflict?

For now, all eyes remain on Tehran—and on how the international community, including Nigeria’s strategic partners, will respond.
