Summary: After over a decade in hiding, alleged drug kingpin Reginald Peter Chidiebere has been arrested by NDLEA following seizure of massive cocaine and heroin shipments worth millions at Lagos airport.

The long arm of the law has finally caught up with an alleged major drug trafficker who spent 13 years evading justice after jumping bail on cocaine trafficking charges.

Reginald Peter Chidiebere, described by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as a notorious drug kingpin, has been taken into custody following the seizure of large quantities of cocaine and heroin linked to his criminal network at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos.

13 Years on the Run

According to a statement released on Sunday, March 1 by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Chidiebere’s troubles with the law began in 2013 when he was first arrested over cocaine shipments into Nigeria. He was arraigned before Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court Lagos in charge number FHC/L/187c/2923.

However, after the trial judge granted him bail in 2013, the suspect vanished into thin air, beginning what would become a 13-year game of cat and mouse with law enforcement.

The Trail of Heroin That Led to His Downfall

Chidiebere’s name resurfaced prominently in February 2024 when NDLEA operatives intercepted a massive shipment of 49.70 kilograms of heroin imported from South Africa at the Lagos airport’s import shed. Intelligence gathered during the investigation pointed directly to him as one of the masterminds behind the operation.

Following this discovery, NDLEA operatives conducted a follow-up raid on February 19, 2024, at his Golden Platinum Hotel & Suites, located at No. 16/18 Reginald Peter Chidiebere Street, Hope Estate, Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos. The boldness of naming a street after himself would prove to be part of his undoing.

During the hotel raid, operatives recovered an additional 2.20 kilograms of heroin from one of his guests, Igbuanugo Ebuka ThankGod.

NDLEA Tightens the Noose

Sensing the heat, Chidiebere immediately went underground. But NDLEA wasn’t backing down. The agency secured interim forfeiture of his hotel property and blocked all bank accounts traced to him since 2024.

“Following these developments, Chidiebere could no longer sustain himself in hiding, prompting his surrender to the agency on 13th February 2026,” Babafemi explained in the statement.

The suspect has since been taken into custody to face both his pending 2013 charges for which he jumped bail and fresh charges related to the 2024 heroin consignments linked to his operations.

Meth Lab Discovered in Imo State

In a related development that shows NDLEA’s nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking, operatives in Imo State on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory hidden in Isiozi Obiato, Umuaka, Njaba Local Government Area.

The secret facility yielded 18.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, along with large quantities of precursor chemicals and equipment used in producing the dangerous illicit substance.

A Warning to Drug Traffickers

Chidiebere’s arrest after 13 years sends a strong message that no matter how long it takes, the law eventually catches up with criminals. His case demonstrates NDLEA’s commitment to tracking down drug traffickers, even those who believe they can hide forever.

The combination of asset forfeiture, account freezing, and persistent investigation proved that running from justice only delays the inevitable.

As Nigerians continue to grapple with the devastating effects of drug abuse on our youth and communities, operations like these give hope that the fight against drug trafficking is making significant progress.

The suspect now faces the full weight of the law for over a decade of alleged criminal activity in the drug trade.
