A 32-year-old special education teacher in the United States has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of child abuse after allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old student repeatedly over several months.
Mahayla Benavides, who taught at Stevens Elementary School in Spokane, Washington, is currently facing charges of child rape and child molestation, according to court documents filed in the case.

Benavides, 32, was arrested and is currently being held at Spokane County jail. During her court appearance on Tuesday, March 17, she entered a not guilty plea to all charges.
Prosecutors initially requested a bond of $750,000, arguing that the serious nature of the crimes and the threat she poses to the community warranted the high amount. However, her defense attorney successfully argued for a reduction, citing her financial situation and the fact that she has no prior criminal convictions.
The judge ultimately set her bond at $500,000. Her trial has been scheduled for May.
