In what could have been a tragic story, divine intervention saved three lives when two speeding vehicles collided along Onipanu expressway, leaving a teacher and two secondary school students with minor injuries.

The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, sent shockwaves through the Epe community as news spread about the crash involving students of Lagos State Model Junior College, Igbonla, Epe.

According to Mr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the accident happened when two vehicles—both travelling at high speed—collided head-on along the busy expressway.

The force of the impact was so severe that one of the vehicles spun across the road into the opposite lane, a scenario that typically results in fatal consequences on Lagos roads.

The Occupants: A Teacher and His Students

The Suzuki Alto involved in the crash was carrying three occupants: Mr. Joseph, a Basic Technology teacher at Lagos State Model Junior Secondary School, Igbonla, Epe, and two of his JSS 2 students—Animashaun Ridwan and Ogunbamowo Michael.

The second vehicle, a Honda Accord, had only one occupant.

Despite the severity of the collision and the extensive damage to both vehicles, LASEMA reported that no lives were lost in the incident—a development many are describing as nothing short of miraculous.

Swift Emergency Response Saves the Day

“LASEMA is pleased to report that no fatalities occurred and all occupants of the vehicles escaped without serious injury,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated in his official report.

However, the two students complained of head and eye discomfort following the crash. LASEMA’s paramedics quickly attended to the young victims at the scene, stabilizing them and administering first aid before handing them over safely to their anxious parents.

The agency’s Light Tow Truck was deployed to remove the badly damaged Suzuki Alto from the road to prevent what emergency responders call a “secondary incident”—when other vehicles crash into an accident scene.

Both vehicles have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A Wake-Up Call for Lagos Motorists

This incident adds to the growing list of road accidents plaguing Lagos roads, many of which are attributed to excessive speeding and reckless driving.

The LASEMA boss used the opportunity to sound a strong warning to motorists across the state.

“LASEMA urges all road users to exercise extreme caution, observe speed limits, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations at all times,” he emphasized. “Reckless driving and speeding endanger lives and could lead to serious accidents.”

He further called on motorists to prioritize safety to prevent similar incidents and protect lives on Lagos roads.

The Bigger Picture

As Lagos continues to grapple with traffic congestion and road safety challenges, incidents like this serve as stark reminders of the dangers lurking on our expressways.

Many Lagosians have expressed relief that this particular story had a happy ending, especially considering that schoolchildren were involved.

Parents and guardians are also being reminded to ensure that those transporting their children—whether teachers, drivers, or family members—understand the importance of safe driving practices.

For Mr. Joseph and his two students, this Wednesday evening could have been their last. Instead, they live to tell the tale of how they cheated death on Lagos roads.
