A Federal Capital Territory Magistrates’ Court has handed down an unusual sentence to a businessman caught stealing electrical cables from a mosque during Ramadan

In a judgment that has caught the attention of many residents of the Federal Capital Territory, a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abuja has ordered one Musa Ibrahim, a businessman, to sweep the premises of Amir Mosque in Wuse II for one month as punishment for stealing electrical cables worth N2 million.

The convict, who appeared before Magistrate Lami Sani on Tuesday, pleaded guilty to charges of mischief and theft brought against him by the prosecution.

The Crime: Taking Advantage of Ramadan Generosity

According to the Prosecution Counsel, A.A. Adeleju, Ibrahim committed the offense on March 5, during the holy month of Ramadan when the mosque was distributing food to the less privileged.

The prosecutor told the court that the convict had gained entry into the mosque premises under the false pretense of collecting Ramadan food alongside other beneficiaries. However, while others patiently queued to receive their meals, Ibrahim had other plans.

“While others were in the queue for the meal, the convict used the back door to remove the mosque’s electric cables,” Adeleju informed the court.

This act of betrayal, exploiting the generosity shown during one of Islam’s holiest months, particularly shocked many observers of the case.

Confession and Recovery

During police investigations following his arrest, Ibrahim confessed to committing the crime. The stolen electrical cables, valued at N2 million, were successfully recovered from him by law enforcement officials.

Before his sentencing, the convict made an emotional plea to the court, begging for leniency and promising never to engage in such criminal activities again.

The Sentence: Community Service with a Message

Rather than handing down a custodial sentence, Magistrate Lami Sani opted for a punishment that many see as both corrective and restorative. Ibrahim will spend the next month sweeping the very mosque he violated, serving as a constant reminder of his actions while also making amends to the community he wronged.

This sentencing approach reflects a growing trend in Nigerian courts to explore alternative punishments that emphasize rehabilitation and community service, particularly for first-time offenders who show remorse.

The case serves as a stern warning to those who might consider taking advantage of religious institutions and charitable activities for criminal purposes. It also highlights the vigilance of mosque authorities and the swift response of law enforcement in protecting public property.

As Ibrahim begins his month-long service at Amir Mosque, his case stands as a cautionary tale about the consequences of betraying community trust, especially during sacred periods when kindness and generosity should be the order of the day.
