The roads of Sokoto State have once again become a scene of unimaginable grief, as a fatal road accident claimed the lives of no fewer than six people, among them a mother and her children — three members of the same family wiped out in a single, tragic moment.

The ill-fated vehicle, a FishEye Wagon, was carrying approximately nine passengers when the crash occurred, cutting short lives and leaving families shattered.

A Family Lost in an Instant

Among the victims were a mother and her children, a loss so profound it sends chills down the spine. For many Nigerian families, every journey — whether to the market, a naming ceremony, or a long-distance trip home — carries an unspoken prayer: God, let us arrive safely. Sadly, that prayer went unanswered for this family.

Nigeria’s Road Safety Crisis: When Will It End?

This tragedy is yet another grim reminder of the alarming rate of road accidents plaguing Nigeria. From Lagos to Kano, Abuja to Sokoto, barely a week passes without news of lives lost on our roads.

Contributing factors often include:

– Overloading of vehicles beyond passenger capacity
– Poor road infrastructure and badly maintained highways
– Reckless driving and disregard for traffic regulations
– Lack of vehicle roadworthiness checks
– Driver fatigue, especially on long-distance routes

A Call to Action

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and relevant state authorities must intensify efforts to enforce road safety regulations. But beyond government action, we all have a role to play — from refusing to board overloaded vehicles, to holding transport operators accountable.

Six families are currently in mourning. Six chairs are empty at dining tables. A mother will never again call her children home for dinner.

As a nation, we must do better — because every life lost on our roads is one too many.

> May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may their families find the strength to bear this unbearable loss. 🕊️
