A Nigerian web developer has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to pour out his heart in a raw, emotional message directed at a hit-and-run driver who rammed into his wife on a Lagos road and sped off — leaving her fighting for her life without so much as a backward glance.

The incident, which has since sparked outrage across Nigerian social media, is yet another painful reminder of the dangerous reality many Nigerians face every single day on our roads.

What Happened?

The accident occurred on a Lagos road when a driver — whose identity remains unknown — violently collided with the man’s wife and simply… drove away. No stopping. No checking if she was alive. No calling for help. Nothing. Just tyres screeching and a cloud of dust, leaving an innocent woman crumpled on the road.

A Husband’s Cry That Broke the Internet

Unable to keep his pain bottled up, the devastated husband turned to X to address the faceless coward directly. His post, raw with emotion and barely-contained anguish, resonated deeply with thousands of Nigerians who know all too well that our roads can turn into battlegrounds in the blink of an eye.

His message was simple but piercing — how do you look at yourself in the mirror? How do you sleep at night knowing you left a human being — somebody’s wife, somebody’s mother, somebody’s daughter — to die on the roadside like she meant nothing?

This Is Bigger Than One Accident

Let’s be honest — this story hits different because many of us have either witnessed or heard of similar situations. Lagos roads, in particular, have seen their fair share of reckless driving, speeding okadas, danfo buses that respect no traffic rule, and private car owners who drive like the road belongs to their grandfather’s compound.

But hit-and-run? That is a special kind of wickedness.

Under Nigerian law, fleeing the scene of an accident is a criminal offence. The Lagos State Road Traffic Law makes it clear that every driver involved in an accident must stop and render assistance. Failure to do so can result in prosecution, fines, and imprisonment.

Yet, fear — fear of jungle justice, fear of “area boys,” fear of angry mobs — often drives people to flee instead of doing the right thing.

What Should You Do If You Witness a Road Accident in Nigeria?

– Do NOT drive past — pull over safely if you can
– Call emergency services* — Lagos State Emergency: **767** or *112
– Do not move the victim unless they are in immediate danger (e.g., fire)
– Control the crowd — mob action makes situations worse
– Take note of the vehicle plate number of any fleeing driver and report to the nearest police station

A Word to That Driver

Wherever you are — whether you are reading this on your phone in your office in Victoria Island, or sitting in traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge — know this: what goes around comes around. The same road you sped away on can humble any of us.

There is still time to do the right thing. Turn yourself in. Face the consequences. At least let this family have some form of justice and closure.

We pray for the swift and full recovery of the victim. To her husband — Nigeria sees your pain, and we stand with you.
