Summary: Bandits attack Sabon Gero community in Kaduna State, killing a vigilante member and abducting seven people including a pregnant woman and nursing mother with her baby.
In yet another heartbreaking incident highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, suspected bandits have wreaked havoc in Sabon Gero community, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving families devastated and a community in mourning.
Midnight Terror Strikes Family
The horror unfolded around midnight on Sunday when heavily armed gunmen stormed the peaceful community and targeted a specific household. According to Daily Trust’s Wednesday report, the attackers made away with seven family members, including a pregnant woman and a nursing mother clutching her baby.
Among the victims was Jamila Alhaji Ado, who managed to escape her captors after hours of being forced to trek through the bush despite her physical limitations.
“They came into the house at night and gathered us together with our children and the other women, including a pregnant woman and a nursing mother with her baby, and took us away,” Jamila recounted, her voice heavy with the trauma of the experience.
A Desperate Journey Through the Bush
The escaped victim described the harrowing ordeal of being marched through rough terrain in the dead of night. When she protested that she couldn’t walk, the heartless abductors showed no mercy initially.
“I told them I could not walk, but they forced me. As we started moving, they noticed I was falling, so they left me in the bush and continued,” she explained.
Her escape, though fortunate, offers little comfort as seven members of her family remain in the clutches of these criminals.
Ransom Demand Preceded Attack
The head of the affected family, Alhaji Ado Idris, revealed a chilling detail: the bandits had contacted him weeks before the attack, demanding money.
“They called me about three weeks ago asking for money, and I told them I had none,” the distraught family head disclosed.
His refusal apparently triggered the brutal revenge attack that has now left his household shattered.
“When they entered, they started shooting, but they did not see me. They took my wives, including the pregnant one and the nursing mother with her baby, and my other children. Right now, seven members of my family are in their hands in the bush. I am appealing for help to rescue them,” Alhaji Idris pleaded.
Vigilante Member Pays Ultimate Price
The community’s grief multiplied when the bandits killed Abdulrahman Lawal, a dedicated vigilante member who stood up to defend his community.
Aliyu Muktar, a community vigilante leader, confirmed the tragic incident, explaining that the deceased was attacked at his shop while the bandits surrounded the area with gunfire.
“The attackers were shooting after surrounding the area. He struggled with one of them before they shot him,” Muktar narrated.
Abdulrahman’s father, Muhammadu Lawal, shared the painful final moments, revealing that his son died en route to the hospital from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.
Growing Security Concerns in Kaduna
This latest incident adds to the growing list of bandit attacks that continue to plague Kaduna State and neighbouring regions. Communities like Sabon Gero now live in constant fear, with residents questioning when the violence will end.
The abduction of vulnerable victims—particularly a pregnant woman and a nursing mother with her infant—demonstrates the complete disregard these criminals have for human life and dignity.
As Alhaji Ado Idris and his community await help to rescue the seven captives, the incident serves as another stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced security measures across Nigeria’s troubled regions.
The families affected by this tragedy continue to appeal for assistance from security agencies and relevant authorities to ensure the safe return of their loved ones.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the affected families during this difficult time. We will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as they become available.
