The British-Nigerian boxing champion continues to honour the memory of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele while supporting their grieving families
Anthony Joshua has shown that his bond with his late friends transcends even death, as he spent Mother’s Day weekend celebrating with the families of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele – two close companions who tragically lost their lives in a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway last December.
The 36-year-old former heavyweight champion, who was also involved in the fatal crash that occurred around 11am on Monday, December 29, 2025, has remained true to his promise to stand by the bereaved families during this difficult period.
A Celebration of Life and Brotherhood
In a touching video that has since gone viral on social media, AJ was seen dancing and sharing lighthearted moments with members of both families at a Mother’s Day gathering. The footage shows the boxing star moving between relatives, embracing them warmly and sharing jokes on the dancefloor – a bittersweet celebration that honoured both the living and the departed.
During the event, an emotional Joshua addressed the gathering, paying heartfelt tribute to his fallen “brothers” while fighting back tears.
“I thank God that we can come under one roof and celebrate our mothers, celebrate our brothers, celebrate those that are not with us, celebrate those that are with us, knowing that our fate will one day come,” Joshua said, his voice heavy with emotion.
“We just stay strong until that day. We pray for our transition and just to be great in the afterlife. Why I talk about that is because my heart is for my bros right now.”
The Tragic Accident That Changed Everything
The fatal crash occurred on the notoriously dangerous Lagos-Ibadan expressway, a road that has claimed countless lives over the years. Joshua, who escaped with only minor injuries, was hospitalized and released on New Year’s Day.
The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has since appeared in court facing multiple charges including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s license.
A Bond Forged Through Years of Loyalty
Joshua’s relationship with Sina and Latz went far beyond mere friendship. The two men were part of his inner circle, trusted allies who accompanied him around the world throughout his illustrious boxing career.
At the Mother’s Day gathering, AJ took the opportunity to thank the mothers of both men for raising such loyal companions.
“This is for my mum and our family but also Sina and Latz, Sina’s mum, Latz’s mum, it’s all interconnected,” Joshua said. “I’m not making too much sense, I’m just speaking from my heart basically.”
He continued: “So thank you mums for giving me Latz and Sina for so many years, looking over me, I appreciate it a lot and thank you very much.”
Nigeria Mourns With AJ
Social media users across Nigeria have expressed admiration for Joshua’s commitment to honouring his friends’ memories and supporting their families.
One Twitter user, @Cleverlydey4u, shared the video with the caption: “Anthony Joshua spent Mother’s Day with the mothers of his late friends, Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele and Sina Ghami ❤️🥺 Losing his two friends, it’s not easy for him. He’s smiling but not happy within him. May God protect you Anthony Joshua. 🙏❤️”
Many Nigerians have praised the boxer not just for his achievements in the ring, but for his character outside it – particularly his decision to remain close to the bereaved families rather than distancing himself from the painful memories.
Keeping a Low Profile
Since the tragic accident, Joshua has maintained a relatively low profile, stepping away from the public eye as he processes his grief and supports those affected by the loss.
This Mother’s Day celebration represents one of his first public appearances since the incident, and it’s clear that the pain of losing his two close friends remains fresh.
The gathering served as a reminder that in Nigerian culture, family extends beyond blood relations. Joshua’s presence at the event and his emotional tribute underscore the deep bonds of brotherhood that existed between him and the deceased men.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with road safety issues, particularly on dangerous routes like the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Joshua’s story serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be cut short – and the importance of cherishing those we love while they’re still with us.
May the souls of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele continue to rest in perfect peace. 🕊️
