Summary: Armed bandits from Benin Republic axis attack Nigerian immigration checkpoint in Niger State, stealing rifles and abducting officer. Rescue operation underway.

In a brazen daylight attack that has heightened security concerns along Nigeria’s northwestern borders, armed bandits riding motorcycles stormed an immigration checkpoint in Niger State, leaving one officer in captivity and the community in shock.

The disturbing incident occurred at Balia village in Borgu Local Government Area on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026, around 10:30 a.m., when immigration officers on duty found themselves at the mercy of heavily armed criminals.

The Attack

According to renowned security analyst Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the incident, the attackers reportedly came from the Republic of Benin axis and were headed towards Babana Market when they descended on the unsuspecting officers at the checkpoint.

The assailants, who operated with military-style precision, successfully overpowered the immigration personnel, seizing two AK-47 rifles—each fully loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. In a development that underscores the deteriorating security situation in parts of Niger State, the bandits also abducted one of the officers, identified as Umar Yusuf.

His colleague, Unisa Shehu, managed to escape during the chaos but had to flee without his weapon, which fell into the hands of the attackers.

Rescue Efforts Underway

Following the attack, security forces, local vigilantes, and hunters have been mobilized to comb the area in search of the abducted officer and to recover the stolen weapons.

The collaboration between formal security agencies and community-based security outfits reflects the all-hands-on-deck approach increasingly adopted in combating banditry across Nigeria’s north-central and northwestern regions.

Growing Security Concerns

This latest incident adds to the growing list of security challenges facing Niger State and neighboring communities along the porous borders with Benin Republic. The ease with which armed criminals move across borders and attack security installations continues to raise questions about border security and inter-agency coordination.

The targeting of immigration officers—whose primary duty includes monitoring cross-border movements—further highlights the audacity of criminal elements operating in the region.

As rescue operations continue, families, colleagues, and concerned Nigerians await positive news about the safe return of Umar Yusuf, even as questions linger about how to effectively secure Nigeria’s vast and vulnerable border communities.
