Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have neutralised one suspected Fulani militia member and recovered two motorcycles following a fierce exchange of fire, after a deadly attack on female miners in Plateau State.

The military’s swift response came after the brutal murder of the female miners sent shockwaves through the affected community, once again drawing national attention to the persistent security challenges facing the North Central region of Nigeria.

According to reports, the suspected militia member was gunned down during a gun battle with troops who moved quickly to intercept the attackers following the gruesome incident. Two motorcycles — commonly used by armed groups to carry out hit-and-run attacks across the region — were also recovered during the operation.

Plateau State: A Region Under Siege

For many Nigerians, news of violence in Plateau State has unfortunately become all too familiar. The state, known for its breathtaking highlands and rich mineral resources, has been the flashpoint for recurring clashes that have claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless families over the years.

The targeting of female miners — ordinary women simply trying to earn a living — underscores the ruthless and indiscriminate nature of these attacks.

Military Vows to Restore Peace

The troops’ response signals the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to restoring lasting peace in the troubled region under the OPEP mandate. Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with security forces by providing timely and credible intelligence to help prevent further bloodshed.

As investigations continue, many Nigerians are calling on the federal and state governments to go beyond military responses and tackle the root causes of the recurring violence — including land disputes, resource competition, and the unchecked proliferation of arms across the region.

The victims and their families remain in our thoughts as communities in Plateau State once again count the heavy cost of this unending cycle of violence.
