A 42-year-old man is dead, and a suspect is in custody — all over a dispute that began with just five hundred naira.
—
The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the tragic killing of a 42-year-old man at Kekoti, Ajere, in the Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.
According to the State Police spokesperson, the incident — which has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community — stemmed from what eyewitnesses describe as a heated argument over a mere N500.
What Happened?
The deceased, a resident of the Kekoti community in Ajere, lost his life in what police are treating as a homicide. A suspect has since been apprehended by operatives of the Cross River State Police Command and is currently being held as investigations continue.
Details emerging from the community paint a grim picture — a disagreement over five hundred naira, an amount most Nigerians would spend on a bottle of soft drink or a plate of beans, escalated fatally, costing a man his life and leaving a family shattered.
The Bitter Reality
This incident is a painful reminder of how quickly tempers can flare and lives can be lost over matters that, in the grand scheme of things, mean very little. In communities across Nigeria — from the Niger Delta to the North, from Lagos to the East — we continue to witness avoidable tragedies rooted in uncontrolled anger and the failure to walk away.
N500. That is all a man’s life was worth in that moment of madness.
A father, a brother, a neighbour, a community member — gone. And for what?
Police Response
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and assured residents that the matter is being thoroughly investigated. The suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
