A chilling reminder of the human trafficking menace threatening our communities
The long arm of the law has once again caught up with evil, as a suspected human trafficker identified simply as Rita* was apprehended in *Aliade, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, following her alleged involvement in the trafficking of underage girls.
Seven underage girls were recovered during the arrest — seven lives that could have been swallowed whole by one of Nigeria’s most devastating criminal enterprises.
What We Know So Far
Rita was arrested by security operatives in Aliade, a community in Gwer East LGA, one of the many areas in Benue State that has increasingly become a target for traffickers exploiting vulnerable families and young girls.
The seven underage victims found in her custody are now believed to be safe, though the full details of their ordeal and intended destination are still being unravelled by authorities.

Let us call it what it is. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and it is happening right here on our streets, in our markets, and sometimes even through people we trust.
Nigeria remains one of the most significantly affected countries in West Africa when it comes to human trafficking. Young girls — many from poor rural communities — are lured or forcefully taken under the guise of better jobs, education, or opportunities in the city, only to end up exploited, abused, and stripped of their dignity.
Benue State, like many other states in the Middle Belt and South-South regions, has seen its fair share of these heartbreaking cases.
