Summary: Seven individuals have been arraigned before a Lagos court for assaulting LAWMA enforcement officers during an environmental sanitation operation on Lagos Island. They face multiple charges including breach of peace and obstruction of duty.

The Lagos State judiciary has taken a firm stance against environmental lawlessness as seven suspects appeared before the Special Offences (Mobile) Court in Ikeja over allegations of assaulting officers of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

The accused persons – Olamilekan Abdullahi (21), Akeem Olamilekan (24), Frank Tom (25), Sakiru Jamiu (20), Emmanuel Abiodun (41), Olarewanju Onyowale (35), and Taiwo Yusuf (30) – were arrested on March 8, 2026, during a routine environmental enforcement exercise in the Moshalashi Jimoh area of Lagos Island.

The Charges

The defendants faced arraignment on March 10, 2026, in the case titled Attorney General of Lagos State v. Olamilekan Abdullahi & 6 Others. The prosecution presented a five-count charge against them, including:

– Conduct likely to cause breach of peace
– Indiscriminate dumping of refuse at an unapproved location
– Failure to patronise an approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operator
– Obstruction of officers in the discharge of their duties
– Assault on public officials

When the charges were read in court, all seven defendants entered a plea of not guilty.

Court’s Decision

The presiding magistrate adjourned the matter until April 24, 2026, for trial to commence. However, the court granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000 each, with stringent conditions attached.

Each defendant must produce two responsible sureties – one must be a recognised community leader, while the other must be a gainfully employed relative. Until these bail conditions are met, the defendants will remain in a correctional facility.

LAWMA’s Strong Warning

Following the incident, LAWMA issued a stern warning to residents across Lagos State, emphasizing that obstruction or assault of enforcement personnel constitutes a serious criminal offence under state laws.

The waste management authority made it clear that any actions aimed at undermining environmental enforcement operations would be met with the full weight of the law through appropriate legal channels.

What This Means for Lagosians

This case sends a strong message about the Lagos State Government’s commitment to maintaining environmental standards and protecting its workers. The assault on enforcement officers not only disrupts public service but also undermines efforts to keep Lagos clean and habitable.

Residents are reminded to:
– Patronise only approved PSP waste operators
– Dispose of refuse at designated collection points
– Cooperate fully with LAWMA officials during enforcement exercises
– Report environmental violations through proper channels

As Lagos continues its transformation into a cleaner, more organized megacity, compliance with environmental laws remains non-negotiable. The ongoing prosecution of these seven individuals demonstrates that attacking public officials in the line of duty will have serious legal consequences.

The case continues on April 24, 2026.
