In a decisive military victory, Nigerian troops have successfully repelled a major coordinated terrorist offensive in Yobe State, eliminating over 20 Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents, including a high-ranking commander.
The Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI announced on Wednesday, 11th March 2026, that their forces stationed in Goniri came under heavy assault but turned the tables on the attackers, dealing them devastating losses.
How the Battle Unfolded
According to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer at the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, the terrorists launched their attack from multiple directions starting Monday night, 9th March, and continuing into the early hours of Tuesday, 10th March 2026.
“The attacks occurred from the night of Monday, 9 March 2026, through the early hours of Tuesday, 10 March 2026, when the troops came under heavy assault from multiple directions,” Lt. Col. Uba explained in his statement.
The insurgents attempted a pincer movement, advancing simultaneously from Goniri village and the Ngamdu junction axis in what appeared to be a calculated strategy to surround the military position under Sector 2 of OPHK.
Superior Firepower and Tactics Win the Day
Thanks to advanced surveillance systems, Nigerian troops detected the approaching terrorists early and prepared their response. When the attack began, our gallant soldiers responded with what military sources described as “superior firepower and tactical manoeuvre.”
The coordination was impressive: ground forces maintained defensive positions while reinforcements were quickly mobilised. The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided critical close air support that proved decisive in breaking the terrorists’ assault.
Overwhelmed by the military’s response, the insurgents were forced into a chaotic retreat, leaving behind their dead, weapons, and equipment.
High-Value Target Eliminated
Among the neutralised terrorists was Abu Yusu, identified as the Munzir (a senior commander position) of Dursula. His elimination represents a significant blow to ISWAP’s command structure in the region.
Substantial Weapons Cache Recovered
Following the failed attack, troops recovered an impressive arsenal abandoned by the fleeing terrorists, including:
– Multiple machine guns
– AK-47 rifles
– Improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
– Assorted bombs
– Ammunition of various calibres
Follow-Up Operations Ongoing
Military operations didn’t stop with repelling the attack. Troops conducted clearance operations in the Gwaigomari area within the notorious Timbuktu Triangle, discovering additional terrorist bodies during patrols that continued through Wednesday morning.
Intelligence suggests some wounded terrorists escaped into nearby communities, and search operations are currently underway in these areas.
Our Troops Stand Strong
While some Nigerian soldiers sustained injuries during the intense firefight, they were immediately evacuated and are reportedly in stable condition receiving medical care.
The military location in Goniri remains firmly under Nigerian control, with ground forces and air support conducting aggressive follow-up operations in surrounding areas.
Military High Command Responds
The Military High Command praised the troops for their bravery and tactical excellence, encouraging them to maintain the pressure on terrorist elements in the region.
“Operation HADIN KAI remains resolute and committed to the complete defeat of terrorism and the restoration of lasting peace and security across the North-East region,” the statement affirmed.
This latest victory demonstrates the growing effectiveness of Nigerian military operations in the North-East and the unwavering commitment of our armed forces to protect citizens and restore lasting peace to communities affected by insurgency.
As Operation HADIN KAI continues its mission, Nigerians can take comfort in knowing that our troops remain vigilant, well-equipped, and determined to eliminate the terrorist threat once and for all.
