Summary: Two young men suspected to be Federal Polytechnic Nekede students drowned in Otammiri River, Owerri, after ignoring safety warnings during a weekend swimming outing.

A tragic incident has cast a shadow over Owerri, the Imo State capital, as two young men suspected to be students of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede lost their lives to drowning in the Otammiri River over the weekend.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday when a group of young men visited the popular river for swimming and photography. What started as a leisure outing turned fatal when two of them ventured into deeper waters and lost their lives.

The Ill-Fated Swimming Trip

According to an eyewitness who spoke with journalists on condition of anonymity, the group had arrived at the river with plans to swim and take photographs. However, a local resident who noticed them warned against swimming, especially considering the late hour of the day.

Sadly, the warning fell on deaf ears. The young men proceeded with their plans, and two of them swam into the deeper section of the river where they reportedly lost their footing and drowned.

Conflicting Reports on Victims’ Identity

While sources claim the victims were students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, the institution’s leadership has not officially confirmed this information.

Destiny Nwosu, President of the Student Union Government (SUG) of Federal Poly Nekede, acknowledged hearing about the drowning but emphasized that the victims’ identities remain unverified.

“Yes, I heard that two people drowned at the Otammiri River, but up until now, we have not confirmed that they were students of our school,” Nwosu stated. “For now, I cannot confirm whether they were Nekede Federal Polytechnic students or from other institutions in the state, or even if they were students at all.”

The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Ike Ibe, also distanced the school management from the incident, stating they were not aware of such occurrence.

Similarly, Daniel Promise, President of the National Association of Imo State Students, Federal Polytechnic Nekede chapter, said he only learned about the incident through a video circulating on social media but could not confirm if the victims were students of the institution.

Unconfirmed Names Surface

Despite official denials, sources within the community have identified one of the victims as Chukwudi Okwuchukwu, allegedly a National Diploma I (ND1) Computer Science student. The second victim, known simply as Igwilo, was reportedly a friend of one of the four people who went for the swimming outing.

The bodies of both victims have since been recovered from the river and deposited at a morgue.

A Familiar Story, A Preventable Tragedy

This incident serves as yet another painful reminder of the dangers of swimming in unfamiliar or unsupervised waters, particularly rivers with unpredictable depths and currents.

Many Nigerian rivers, including the Otammiri, have claimed numerous lives over the years, often during recreational activities. The advice from the local resident—which was tragically ignored—highlights the importance of listening to those familiar with local waterways.

As investigations continue into the true identities of the victims, this tragedy underscores the need for young people to exercise extreme caution during recreational activities and to always heed safety warnings from locals and authorities.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this difficult time.
