A devastating accident at Badagry Roundabout has left three people dead after a cement-laden truck lost control and crushed them on Monday morning, February 23, 2026.
The victims include a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer who was on duty controlling traffic, and two commercial motorcyclists who were waiting to pick up passengers at the busy junction.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred around 9 am when the truck was approaching the roundabout at high speed. The driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve off its lane and crash into the victims.
“The LASTMA officer was controlling the traffic when the truck lost control and crushed him on the spot,” an eyewitness told Punch. “The two motorcyclists were also affected while they were waiting to pick up passengers.”
The impact was instant and fatal, with all three victims dying at the scene of the accident.
Emergency Response and Arrests
The tragic incident caused massive gridlock in the area as emergency responders rushed to the scene. A police source revealed that multiple security agencies were mobilized to manage the situation.
“Other LASTMA officials were mobilised to the scene of the incident due to their affected colleague. Our men were also on the ground, as well as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps, to manage the situation,” the source explained.
The truck driver was immediately apprehended and taken into custody at Badagry Police Station. The remains of the victims were evacuated to a hospital mortuary, while the truck has been impounded pending further investigation.
Official Statements
Yusuf Sanni, unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the arrest of the driver and attributed the crash to loss of control. He urged motorists to avoid the area to allow for proper traffic management.
CSP Folajimi Agosile, Divisional Police Officer of Badagry Police Station, also confirmed that the driver is currently being detained and will face prosecution.
“He will be arraigned at the Chief Magistrates’ Court once investigations are concluded,” Agosile stated.
A Call for Road Safety
This tragic incident once again highlights the dangers posed by reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, especially for heavy-duty vehicles operating in densely populated areas.
