The Federal Capital Territory has been thrown into shock and mourning following the gruesome murder of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer at the hands of suspected motorcycle snatchers in the Karshi community, under the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The slain officer, identified as Maiwada Abubakar Santali, lost his life in what has become an increasingly disturbing pattern of violent crime creeping into communities across the FCT.
A Nation in Mourning
This tragic incident is yet another painful reminder that no one — not even those who wear the uniform and dedicate their lives to protecting Nigerian citizens — is safe from the menace of criminal gangs terrorising our communities.
Karshi, a rapidly growing suburban community on the outskirts of Abuja, has in recent times been flagged as a hotspot for various criminal activities. The brazen killing of a security operative in such an area sends a chilling message about the boldness of these criminal elements.
The Growing Menace of Motorcycle Snatching in Nigeria
Motorcycle and vehicle snatching has become a serious security concern across Nigeria, particularly in the North-Central region. What makes this crime especially dangerous is that perpetrators are increasingly willing to use deadly force — leaving families shattered and communities living in fear.
For many Nigerians, especially those in low-income communities, motorcycles (popularly called okada) are not luxury items — they are lifelines. They serve as the primary source of livelihood for commercial riders and a critical means of transportation for millions. When criminals snatch these bikes, they do not just steal property; they destroy lives.
Calls for Justice and Stronger Security Response
The death of Officer Santali must not be swept under the carpet like so many cases before it. His family deserves justice, and the Karshi community deserves to feel safe again.
Nigerians are calling on the FCT Police Command, the NSCDC, and other relevant security agencies to:

– Fish out and prosecute the perpetrators of this heinous crime
