Real Madrid’s young defender Dean Huijsen has shared a controversial content on social media that many have branded as racially offensive towards Chinese people.

The 20-year-old Spain international, who made the big-money move to Los Blancos from Bournemouth last season, sparked outrage when he reposted a video to his Instagram page, which boasts an impressive 5.2 million followers.

As backlash mounted, Huijsen was compelled to issue an apology on Weibo, one of China’s largest social media platforms. The young defender posted his statement in Chinese, saying:

“I sincerely apologise to my Chinese friends. I previously forwarded content that included offensive messages unintentionally. It was completely unintentional, and I regret the distress caused.”

Fans Demand Accountability

Chinese football fans didn’t hold back in expressing their disappointment and anger. Many took to social media to call out what they perceived as double standards from Real Madrid.

One furious user wrote: “While Real Madrid is speaking out against racism, Huijsen is making racist remarks against Chinese people. Why hasn’t the club responded? Does your anti-racism stance only apply when Vinicius Jr is the one being discriminated against?”

Another user issued a stark warning: “If you don’t want to lose the Chinese market, please apologise immediately.”

Coming After Vinicius Jr Racism Saga

This incident comes hot on the heels of another racism controversy involving Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior and Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

According to recent reports, Prestianni has told UEFA investigators that he directed a homophobic slur – not a racist comment – at Vinicius during their Champions League clash last week.

The match was dramatically halted for 10 minutes when referee Francois Letexier made a crossed arms gesture to signal reported racial abuse at Lisbon’s Estadio de Luz. Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe claimed Prestianni racially abused Vinicius five times, calling him a “monkey” while covering his face.

However, the Argentinian midfielder has now told UEFA officials that he said something else entirely – a homophobic slur – which Vinicius allegedly “misinterpreted.” ESPN reports that Prestianni insists he did not say “mono” (Spanish for “monkey”) as claimed.

The Bigger Picture

These back-to-back incidents highlight the ongoing battle against discrimination in football, whether racial, ethnic, or based on sexual orientation.

Real Madrid, one of the world’s biggest clubs, has been vocal about fighting racism, especially in defense of Vinicius Jr who has faced repeated racist abuse in Spanish stadiums. However, critics are now questioning whether the club’s commitment to anti-discrimination extends equally to all communities.

The Huijsen incident also underscores the massive commercial importance of the Chinese market to European football clubs, and how quickly things can turn when fans feel disrespected.
