A US-based Nigerian correctional officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law after being arrested for alleged public intoxication in the state of Texas.
Bashir Oladimeji Lawal, a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), was recently taken into custody following an incident that has raised eyebrows both in the Nigerian community abroad and back home.
Lawal, who is assigned to the Wainwright Unit in Lovelady, Texas, was arrested on charges of public intoxication — an ironic situation given that his job involves enforcing order and discipline within the correctional system.
The Incident
According to available reports, Lawal was picked up by law enforcement officers after he was found allegedly intoxicated in a public space. The arrest has since made waves online, particularly among Nigerians in the diaspora who follow news about their fellow compatriots living and working in the United States.
