Woman Sparks Debate: "Don't Marry a Poor Man"

Ah, my people, the internet has scattered again, and this time, the table we are shaking has plenty of Sapa on top!

One Nigerian woman, by the name of Abuka Ojochide, decided to wake up and choose vawulence. In a recent Facebook post that is now causing wahala everywhere, she gave one simple, but very loud, piece of advice to her fellow women: Do. Not. Date. Or. Marry. A. Poor. Man.

And just in case you thought she was joking or her account was hacked, OgaMadam Ojochide made it clear that she stands on her words, chest out, no apologies. Na so the matter be.

As you can imagine, the comment section under her post looks like a proper battlefield.

Camp “Preach, Sister, Preach!”

Plenty of women are hailing her, shouting, “Talk your own, we are listening!” For this group, it’s simple maths. They are tired of the “building with a man” storyline that sometimes ends in tears. They argue that “love no dey belle-full” and nobody wants to sign up for a lifetime of sufferhead, only for the man to get rich and upgrade to a new model. In their view, financial security isn’t being a gold-digger; it’s being smart.

Camp “Na Wa For You O!”

But on the other side of the ring, people are dragging her for filth! They are asking, “So all our fathers who started with nothing, our mothers should have left them?” This camp is screaming that this is a pure “gold-digger” anthem. They believe you should stand by your partner, whether they have one kobo to their name or not, because nobody knows tomorrow. For them, character, love, and ambition are far more important than a fat bank account today.

Over to You…

This thing is a serious conversation, and the gbas gbos is still ongoing. Is she speaking the hard truth that many are afraid to say, or is she just promoting a transactional view of love and marriage?

So, we’re throwing the question to you. What is your take on this matter? Should a woman run for the hills at the first sign of Sapa? Or is love enough to conquer all, even an empty bank account?
