Summary: A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operative was shot dead during a violent clash with tipper drivers in Chokocho-Etche, Rivers State, sparking security concerns in the South-South region.
A tragic incident has shaken the security community in Rivers State as an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) lost his life in a violent confrontation with tipper drivers in the Chokocho-Etche area of the state.
The deceased officer, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Corps II (ASC II) Kalu Samuel Ali, was attached to the South-South Mining Marshals and was on routine patrol when the fatal attack occurred on March 9, 2026, at approximately 2:45 p.m.
What Happened?
According to police sources, the NSCDC team encountered a group of tipper drivers during their patrol operations in the Chokocho-Etche area. The confrontation quickly escalated into violence, resulting in ASC II Kalu Samuel Ali being shot in the head.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) for emergency medical treatment. Sadly, medical personnel at the facility later confirmed him dead, despite efforts to save his life.
Security Forces Respond
In what authorities described as a reprisal response to the attack, security personnel at the scene returned fire. The exchange resulted in one of the tipper drivers sustaining injuries. The wounded driver is currently receiving medical treatment at a separate healthcare facility.
Maintaining Law and Order
Recognizing the potential for further violence and escalation, authorities have deployed additional policemen and security personnel to the area. The security presence aims to prevent revenge attacks and maintain peace in the community.
Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt for those responsible for the killing of the NSCDC operative. Investigations are currently ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
A Growing Concern
This incident highlights the increasing dangers faced by security personnel in Nigeria, particularly those involved in monitoring activities in the mining and natural resources sector. The South-South Mining Marshals play a crucial role in combating illegal mining and protecting government resources in the region.
The violent clash also raises questions about the relationship between law enforcement agencies and commercial drivers, particularly those in the tipper-driving business, who are sometimes involved in illegal mining operations.
As investigations continue, the NSCDC and other security agencies in Rivers State remain on high alert to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of their personnel while maintaining law and order in the state.
