Tragedy Again: Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Claims

Summary: Another tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at Saapade Bridge has claimed 10 lives due to reckless one-way driving. We ask, when will this end?

If you have ever travelled on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, you know that feeling when your heart is in your mouth. You pray before you start the journey and you thank God when you arrive safely. The road has become a symbol of both connection and tragedy.

Well, e don happen again o.

Another dark cloud has covered that notorious road. This weekend, at the Saapade Bridge, a terrible crash snatched 10 lives, leaving six other people with serious injuries.

What Caused This One? The Usual Suspect…

According to the Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the cause was the same old story we are tired of hearing: a driver deciding that traffic rules do not apply to him.

A truck driver, in a moment of what can only be described as madness, decided to face oncoming traffic, driving against the flow on his side of the road. He was playing a deadly game of chicken, and this time, everyone lost.

He ended up smashing head-on into a fully loaded Mazda commercial bus. A bus filled with people who were likely travelling to see family, conduct business, or simply trying to get home. Just like that, their journeys were cut short.

FRSC officials who rushed to the scene confirmed that a total of 16 people were involved in the crash. Ten souls were lost on the spot. The six injured passengers were quickly evacuated and rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

The statement from the authorities was clear: the crash was completely avoidable and was a direct result of the truck driver’s decision to drive against traffic, a practice Nigerians call “one-way.”

For How Long?

Chai. This news is heartbreaking. Every time we hear about these incidents on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, we ask the same question: for how long will this continue? How many more lives must be lost before drivers understand that taking “one-way” is a death sentence?

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been thrown into mourning. May God grant them the strength to bear this unimaginable loss. For the injured, we pray for a quick and full recovery.

To every driver reading this, we are begging you. That shortcut is not worth it. The few minutes you think you are saving could cost you, and innocent people, their lives. Please, let’s value human life more than our hurry.

Drive safe. Stay alive.
