Summary: Ex-NFL player Darron Lee allegedly consulted ChatGPT for advice on how to avoid police after his girlfriend’s death. Nigerian readers react to shocking case involving artificial intelligence and crime.

In a chilling case that has shocked Americans and observers worldwide, including Nigerians following international news, former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been accused of murdering his fiancée and then asking ChatGPT—the popular artificial intelligence chatbot—for advice on how to cover up the crime.

The Disturbing Details

Darron Lee, 31, was arrested on February 5 after police discovered the body of his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpetuo, 29, at their home in Ooltewah, Tennessee. He now faces charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

According to prosecutors who presented evidence at a preliminary hearing on Monday, Lee had created a ChatGPT account using the name “Xander” and named his AI assistant “Allie.” The conversations between Lee and the chatbot paint a disturbing picture of a man allegedly seeking digital advice on how to escape justice.

What Lee Asked the AI

In messages sent to ChatGPT the day before his arrest, Lee asked the AI what someone should do when a friend needs to help an unresponsive person but doesn’t want to involve the police.

“Fiancee did her crazy thing again, and now she’s messed up,” Lee wrote to the chatbot. “I wake up and she has two swollen eyes (i didn’t do anything, self-inflicted), she stabbed herself, slit her eye? Idk but she isnt waking up or responding, what do I do?”

Detective Brian Lockhart of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, who testified in court, said Lee had numerous conversations with the AI about the incident, sometimes even using acronyms like “LOL” (laughing out loud) while discussing his girlfriend’s unresponsive state.

Lee also reportedly asked the AI whether a fall could cause bruising to both eyes and “two stabby looking wounds”—questions that prosecutors say reveal his attempt to build a false narrative.

ChatGPT’s Troubling Response

According to testimony, the AI assistant appeared to provide Lee with advice on how to handle the situation without involving police.

“‘Here is exactly what to tell your friend,'” Detective Lockhart read from the chatbot’s response. “‘This is the safest way to handle it without framing it as police trouble.'”

At one point, ChatGPT even told Lee to “pause the joking,” suggesting the AI had detected inappropriate humour in his messages about the serious situation.

The Medical Evidence

District Attorney Coty Wamp presented findings from the medical examiner’s office that painted a horrific picture of Perpetuo’s final moments. The autopsy revealed:

– Knocked-out front teeth
– Multiple stab wounds
– A broken neck
– Blunt force trauma (listed as the cause of death)

Lee had claimed to police that his partner simply fell in the shower, and insisted that no one else had entered the home.

“But if that’s not enough, you have Mr. Lee using ChatGPT as a legal adviser, as a defense attorney, asking ChatGPT to basically give him advice on how you cover up a crime scene,” Wamp told the court.

The Defence’s Position

Deputy Public Defender Mike Little argued that much of the evidence against Lee remains circumstantial.

“All I can remind the court is that we don’t know what happened,” Little said. “The court doesn’t know what happened. Something happened, but we don’t know what happened.”

Judge’s Ruling

After reviewing the evidence, including the revelation that Lee waited 24 hours between consulting ChatGPT and calling emergency services, General Sessions Judge Tori Smith found probable cause to send both charges to the grand jury.

She maintained Lee’s existing bond conditions, stating: “I’m even more convinced now that the offense was especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel and that involved torture or serious physical abuse beyond that necessary to produce death.”

A Nigerian Perspective: Technology and Crime

For Nigerians following this case, it raises important questions about artificial intelligence and its potential misuse. As AI tools like ChatGPT become increasingly popular in Nigeria—used by students, professionals, and businesses—this case serves as a sobering reminder that technology can be weaponized by those with criminal intent.

The case also highlights concerns about AI safety and the responsibility of tech companies to prevent their products from being used to facilitate crimes. While ChatGPT has built-in safeguards against harmful content, this case suggests that determined users may still find ways to extract problematic advice.

What Happens Next?

The case will now proceed to a grand jury, which will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to formally indict Lee on the murder and evidence tampering charges. If convicted of first-degree murder, Lee could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty, depending on Tennessee state law.

As this case unfolds, it will likely spark broader conversations—both in America and globally, including in Nigeria—about the ethics of artificial intelligence, domestic violence, and the lengths some people will go to evade justice in the digital age.

The tragic death of Gabriella Perpetuo serves as a reminder that behind every crime statistic is a real human life cut short, leaving behind grieving family members and unanswered questions.
