In a major shake-up of Kano State’s civil service leadership, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has relieved Alhaji Abdullahi Musa of his duties as the state’s Head of Service, effective immediately.
The development, which was announced on Wednesday, March 11, through a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, has sent ripples through the state’s bureaucratic circles.
Why the Sudden Change?
According to the official statement, the decision is part of the current administration’s broader strategy to overhaul and reposition the Kano State civil service. The governor’s office emphasized that the move aims to achieve greater efficiency, instill discipline, and improve service delivery across all government institutions in the ancient city.
This restructuring aligns with Governor Yusuf’s campaign promises to transform the state’s public service and ensure that government machinery works more effectively for the people of Kano.
A Gracious Exit
Despite the abrupt nature of the removal, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation for Alhaji Abdullahi Musa’s contributions during his tenure as Head of Service. The governor acknowledged his dedication and service to Kano State, wishing him well in his future endeavours.
“We wish him the best in his future endeavours and pray for his continued success in all aspects of life,” the statement read.
Who Takes Over?
The governor has appointed Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu-Maimota, the Permanent Secretary for Admin and General Services at the Cabinet Office, to assume the role in an acting capacity.
Hajiya Bilkisu, a career civil servant with extensive experience in public administration, is expected to provide steady leadership during this transition period while the government considers a substantive appointment.
The outgoing Head of Service has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of the office to the Acting Head of Service to ensure seamless transition and continuity in government operations.
What This Means for Kano’s Civil Service
This latest development signals the Yusuf administration’s determination to implement its reform agenda within the state’s public service. As Kano continues to grapple with the challenges of delivering efficient public services to its large population, many will be watching to see whether these changes translate into tangible improvements in service delivery.
For civil servants across the state, this reshuffle serves as a reminder that the current administration is keen on accountability and performance in the discharge of official duties.
