Summary: A Nigerian man and his Zambian accomplice have been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by an Indian court for attempting to smuggle 2.75kg of heroin from Dubai to Ahmedabad.

In what serves as a stern warning to Nigerians involved in international drug trafficking, an Indian court has handed down a severe 20-year jail sentence to a Nigerian national and his Zambian associate for heroin smuggling.

The Special Court for Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act cases in Ahmedabad delivered the verdict on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, following a lengthy trial that began with arrests made in September 2021.

The Drug Bust Operation

According to India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the operation began when intelligence reports led to the apprehension of Hanchabila John, a Zambian citizen, at Ahmedabad airport on September 3, 2021. John had arrived on a flight from Dubai carrying a substantial 2.75 kilograms of heroin concealed on his person.

The NCB’s Ahmedabad zonal unit didn’t stop at just arresting the courier. Their investigation revealed a wider network that led them to 37-year-old Nwaobu Christian Arinze, a Nigerian national who was identified as the intended receiver of the illegal consignment.

The Legal Process

Following their arrests, the NCB filed formal charges against both men on February 28, 2022, before the Additional District and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad. The charges were filed under relevant provisions of the stringent NDPS Act, which carries mandatory minimum sentences for drug trafficking offences.

After a detailed trial spanning several years, the court found both John and Arinze guilty of the charges. In addition to the 20 years of rigorous imprisonment, each convict was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh (approximately ₦950,000 at current exchange rates).

A Warning to Nigerians Abroad

This case highlights the serious consequences Nigerians face when caught up in international drug trafficking operations. Indian courts, like those in many Asian countries, are known for their strict approach to drug-related offences, with long prison terms being the norm rather than the exception.

For Nigerians living abroad or traveling internationally, this case serves as a sobering reminder that becoming involved in drug trafficking—whether as a courier, receiver, or in any other capacity—can result in decades behind bars in foreign prisons, far from home and family.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly warned its citizens against engaging in drug trafficking, which not only destroys individual lives but also damages the country’s reputation internationally.
