The news reaching Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, is one that will make anyone’s head hot. If you’ve been on social media in the last few hours, your timeline has probably been filled with stories and maybe even videos coming out of the state.
The gist be say, some soldiers from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo allegedly decided to turn students of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) into their personal punching bags. Reports are flying left, right, and centre about how these soldiers were harassing, intimidating, and in some sad cases, physically beating up the students.
For the students of UNIOSUN, this is not just news, this is their reality. Imagine you, trying to focus on your books and get your degree, and the next thing you’re facing harassment from the very people who are supposed to be protecting civilian lives. The wahala got so serious that it simply could not be ignored.
Now, after plenty of noise and outcry from Nigerians online, the Oga at the top for the Depot Nigerian Army in Osogbo, the Commandant, has come out to say they have heard the cries. He has officially ordered a “full investigation” into the matter.
In a statement, the army promised to get to the bottom of the allegations and that any soldier found guilty of misbehaving and bringing shame to the uniform would face the music.
Of course, many Nigerians have heard this kind of promise before. The phrase “we will launch an investigation” can sometimes feel like a way to calm people down until the matter blows over.
But this time, all eyes are on the Army in Osogbo. The students of UNIOSUN, their parents, and indeed all well-meaning Nigerians are watching and waiting. We hope that this is not just talk and that real justice will be served. These young people deserve to go to school in peace without fear of being harassed or brutalised.
