The Lagos Island community is in mourning following the death of Opeyemi Tope Lawal, who reportedly died after being assaulted by car park officials at Marina on Sunday, March 8.

According to eyewitness accounts shared on social media, Lawal was accused of theft and had his hands and feet tied up by the park officials. What followed was a series of events that has left many Nigerians shocked and calling for justice.

The Tragic Events

Facebook user Sheriffdeen Ojon, who brought the incident to public attention on Monday, March 9, alleged that Lawal was tortured by two car park officials at the Marina car park. Despite pleas from residents and market women who begged for his release, the officials—particularly one identified as “Alhaji”—refused to untie the victim.

“They begged him to untie Tope Lawal, but he refused until he gave up,” Ojon wrote in his detailed account of the incident. “The young man also begged, saying he was about to die, but he did not respond and called himself Alhaji.”

Eyewitness accounts reveal that from around 12pm, numerous market women pleaded profusely with the park official to release Lawal, but their cries fell on deaf ears. “There is no way they didn’t beg Alhaji. Since 12pm, those women, they begged Alhaji profusely. But he told them to leave that it’s none of their business,” one woman was heard saying in a video that has since gone viral.

Evidence of Brutality

Disturbing images shared on social media show Lawal’s lifeless body with visible bruises on various parts. Blood had gathered in his eyes, which remained open even in death—a haunting testament to the brutality he allegedly suffered.

Videos circulating online show angry residents confronting one of the suspects, with a man dragging the alleged perpetrator by his shirt while demanding answers in Yoruba: “You said you’ve been targeting my brother since. And now you’ve killed him, abi?”

Community Response and Protests

The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the Lagos Island community. On Monday, following Lawal’s death, residents marched to the Lion Building Police Division to protest and demand justice.

Videos from the protest show locals holding placards, with community members recounting the events leading to Lawal’s death and the refusal of the park officials to heed pleas for mercy.

Arrests Made

In what many see as a positive development, Ojon has confirmed that the suspects have been arrested and are currently detained at Lion Building Police Division on Lagos Island.

“I am delighted that the culprits or killers are currently in detention under the watchful eye of my Isale Eko dear brother, the integrity-driven DPO of Lion Building, CSP Olumide Junaid,” Ojon stated in an update.

He expressed confidence that the case would be handled properly, adding: “I am assured that he will not compromise until the case is transferred to the State CID Panti Lagos for more investigation.”

Calls for Justice

Friends and family members have taken to social media to mourn Lawal while demanding that justice be served. The incident has reignited conversations about extra-judicial punishment and the dangers of jungle justice in Nigeria.

Many Nigerians are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death and for the suspects to face the full weight of the law.

As this case develops, it serves as yet another reminder of the need for restraint, proper legal procedures, and respect for human life, regardless of the alleged offense.

The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as the case is transferred to the State CID for further investigation.
