In a dramatic show of force that lasted over 90 minutes, a combined team of security operatives has successfully rescued 20 kidnap victims and eliminated one suspected kidnapper in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

The high-stakes rescue operation, which took place in the Gidan Dogo forest area, brought together personnel from the FCT Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Nigerian Army Guards Brigade, Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes in a coordinated effort to end the reign of terror that has plagued communities in the area.

The Operation: A Race Against Time

Acting on credible intelligence reports, the security team, led by the Officer in Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, stormed the forest hideout where suspected terrorists had been holding innocent Nigerians hostage. These criminals were believed to be responsible for recent abductions in the Byazhin area of Bwari.

SP Joseph Adeh, spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, revealed that the operation quickly turned into an intense gun battle when the suspects opened fire on the approaching security forces.

“Through superior tactics and firepower, the operatives successfully subdued the kidnappers,” Adeh stated, confirming that one suspect was neutralized during the exchange while two others—identified as Nura Sani and Abdul Bello—were arrested. Other gang members reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds into the surrounding forest and hills.

The 20 rescued victims—comprising 10 males and 10 females—had been abducted from various locations including Byazhin District in the FCT, as well as Gauraka and Tafa areas of Niger State. They include:

All rescued victims have been rushed to hospital for medical attention and are receiving necessary care.

Weapons Recovered

The security team recovered significant weaponry from the suspects, including:
– One AK-47 rifle (breech number 90-17147)
– One magazine loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition
– One locally made firearm

A Word of Caution to Media and Social Media Users

In a significant appeal, SP Adeh urged journalists and social media users to exercise restraint when reporting sensitive security incidents such as kidnappings or ongoing rescue operations.

“Premature or unverified dissemination of such information can endanger the lives of victims and compromise the safety of officers actively involved in rescue missions,” she warned.

This reminder is particularly relevant in our social media age, where information—whether verified or not—spreads like wildfire across platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

Police Commissioner Commends Team, Urges Vigilance

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, praised the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the operatives during the operation. He called on FCT residents to remain calm, vigilant, and security conscious.

Residents are urged to promptly report suspicious persons or movements to the Command through the following emergency numbers:
08032003913
08061581938

What This Means for FCT Residents

This successful operation demonstrates the commitment of Nigeria’s security agencies to tackle the menace of kidnapping head-on. The collaboration between different security outfits—Police, Army, DSS, and local vigilantes—shows that a unified approach can yield positive results.

However, residents must also play their part by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities promptly. The fight against criminality is a collective responsibility that requires everyone’s cooperation.

As we celebrate this victory, our thoughts remain with all those who have been affected by kidnapping and other security challenges in the FCT and across Nigeria. May this operation serve as a strong warning to criminals that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them.

Stay safe, stay vigilant, and remember: if you see something suspicious, say something. Your timely report could save lives.
