Summary: A tragic incident in Delta State has claimed the life of a man killed by suspected kidnappers. Activist Harrison Gwamnishu shares vital security tips for Nigerians living in secluded areas.
The ugly face of insecurity in Nigeria has once again reared its head, this time in Delta State, where a man was brutally killed by suspected kidnappers on March 6, 2025.
Human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, took to social media to share the heartbreaking story of how the victim met his untimely death in Umuchime Community, located by Charly Boy back of Fuji Okpanam area of Delta State.
How the Tragic Incident Unfolded
According to Gwamnishu’s account, the victim’s house was situated in an isolated area—a factor that unfortunately made him an easy target for the criminals. On that fateful evening around 8 pm, as the man was about to drive into his compound after a long day, suspected kidnappers who had been trailing him made their deadly move.
The assailants attempted to force their way into the compound with him. In a chilling display of violence, they first killed the victim’s security dog before abducting him. Tragically, moments later, the man was murdered and his body dumped behind his own compound.
This incident is yet another painful reminder of the security challenges facing Nigerians, particularly those living in isolated or poorly secured areas.
Important Security Tips for Nigerians in Secluded Areas
While sharing this devastating story, Harrison Gwamnishu offered crucial security advice that could save lives. If you or anyone you know lives in a secluded area, these tips are essential:
1. Clear the Bushes Around Your Property
Overgrown grasses and bushes around your compound can serve as perfect hiding spots for criminals. Always ensure that the vegetation around your home is regularly cleared and maintained. This eliminates cover for would-be attackers and gives you better visibility of your surroundings.
2. Build Gates That Conceal Your Compound
According to Gwamnishu, residents of isolated areas should construct gates that prevent passersby from seeing directly into their compounds. This prevents criminals from easily monitoring your movements, knowing when you’re home or away, or identifying valuable property within your premises.
3. Invest in Proper Security Measures
While the victim had a security dog (which was sadly killed by the assailants), additional security measures such as:
– Motion-sensor lights
– CCTV cameras
– Alarm systems
– Membership in neighborhood watch groups
…can provide extra layers of protection.
4. Be Alert and Vigilant
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when returning home. If you notice any suspicious vehicles or persons following you, do not drive straight to your house. Instead, drive to a nearby police station or populated area.
A Growing Concern Across Nigeria
This Delta State incident is sadly not isolated. Across Nigeria, from Lagos to Abuja, Kaduna to Rivers State, kidnapping and violent crimes have become increasingly common. Many Nigerians living in developing areas or on the outskirts of towns face similar security threats.
The question many are asking is: What more can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones in a situation where security agencies seem overwhelmed?
Community Vigilance is Key
Beyond individual security measures, communities must come together to protect one another. Establishing functional community security networks, sharing information about suspicious activities, and maintaining good relationships with local security agencies can make a significant difference.
Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased. May his soul rest in perfect peace, and may justice be served.
