The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, Alabi Anthony, in connection with the rape and murder of a woman identified as Olaseni Veronica in Iboropa community, Akoko North-East Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which occurred last week, has sent shockwaves through the peaceful community and raised fresh concerns about violence against women in our society.
How Police Tracked Down the Suspect
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, detectives successfully apprehended the suspect following credible intelligence and thorough investigative work.
The breakthrough in the case came when police tracked the deceased woman’s missing mobile phone, which ultimately led them to Anthony’s location and subsequent arrest.
Suspect Confesses to the Crime
In what the police have described as a “heinous and inhumane act,” the suspect reportedly made a full confession during interrogation.
DSP Jimoh stated: “The suspect has confessed to the crime, admitting to having carnal knowledge of the victim and thereafter strangling her to death. The command condemns this heinous and inhumane act and assures the public that justice will be diligently pursued.”
Case Transferred to State Headquarters
To ensure thorough investigation and proper prosecution, the case has been transferred from the local division to the Ondo State Police Command headquarters in Akure.
This move demonstrates the seriousness with which the command is treating the matter and its commitment to ensuring that justice is served for the deceased and her family.
Police Appeal to the Public
The police spokesperson used the opportunity to appeal to members of the public on two critical issues:
Report Suspicious Activities Promptly: Citizens are urged to report any suspicious incidents or persons to the nearest police station without delay. Quick reporting can help prevent crimes or aid in swift apprehension of perpetrators.
Avoid Hasty Conclusions: In cases of sudden or unnatural deaths, the public should avoid jumping to conclusions or taking matters into their own hands. Proper investigation by trained professionals is essential for justice to prevail.
DSP Jimoh emphasized that timely reporting of incidents greatly aids effective police investigations and helps bring criminals to justice faster.
A Call for Justice and Safety
This tragic incident serves as yet another reminder of the urgent need to address violence against women in our society. It also highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
As investigations continue, the Ondo State Police Command has assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that justice is served in this case.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of late Olaseni Veronica during this difficult time. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
