As the political temperature rises ahead of the 2027 presidential election, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has fired a scorching salvo at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, challenging them to point at a single project they have successfully completed since taking office.

Speaking to journalists recently, the former Rivers State Governor who has indicated interest in contesting the 2027 presidency, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government of running scared of opposition parties and engaging in what he described as “panic measures” to distract Nigerians from their lack of performance.

“They Are Running Helter Skelter in Panic”

Amaechi did not mince words as he painted a picture of a government in disarray. According to the former Minister, despite claims by the Tinubu administration about their popularity, their recent actions betray deep-seated fear of facing Nigerians at the polls.

“I thought the President said they were popular. What they are doing is panic measures. They are scared,” Amaechi declared. “If you are not scared, let’s meet on the field. Let the people choose who they want to choose. What they are doing is that they are trying to force politicians on the people.”

Where Is the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road?

In a particularly biting criticism, Amaechi highlighted the much-publicized Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, asking a simple but damning question: “Where is the road?”

The coastal highway project, which was announced with much fanfare by the Tinubu administration, has become a subject of controversy and skepticism among Nigerians who question its viability and the transparency of its execution.

Amaechi Lists His Achievements Under Buhari

Drawing a sharp contrast between his tenure as Transport Minister and the current administration’s performance, Amaechi reeled out a list of completed and ongoing projects from his time in office:

Itakpe-Warri railway line – fully operational
Lagos-Ibadan rail – currently in use by Nigerians
Kano-Kaduna railway – under construction before they left office
Kaduna-Abuja railway – completed and functional
Lekki Deep Sea Port – delivered and operational

“I was Minister for Transport. I can show you evidence of what I have done,” Amaechi stated confidently, challenging the current government to match his record.

“Show One Thing You’ve Done Apart From Stealing Money”

Perhaps the most damaging aspect of Amaechi’s critique was his direct challenge to the Tinubu government:

“Let this government show one thing they have done, either in the north or in the south, apart from stealing money.”

This accusation of corruption and lack of tangible development will likely resonate with many Nigerians who have been grappling with economic hardship, fuel subsidy removal, naira devaluation, and rising cost of living under the current administration.

What This Means for 2027

Amaechi’s broadside against the ruling party signals the beginning of what promises to be a fierce battle for the soul of Nigeria in 2027. His strategy appears to be positioning himself as the candidate of performance and accountability, contrasting his record of project delivery with what he portrays as the current government’s record of failure and corruption.

As Nigerians continue to face economic challenges and search for credible alternatives, the question Amaechi poses – “What have they done?” – may become the defining theme of the opposition’s campaign strategy heading into the next election cycle.

Whether the Tinubu administration can point to concrete achievements to counter these criticisms remains to be seen. For now, Rotimi Amaechi has thrown down the gauntlet, and the political arena is heating up well ahead of 2027.
