A Party Controlling 31 States Can’t Fear ADC — Governor Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has thrown a political jab at the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as no threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the governor made it clear that the APC, which currently controls 31 states across Nigeria, has no reason to lose sleep over an opposition party that doesn’t even govern a single state.

“At one point, they said the PDP is the strongest opposition to our party, and now it is the ADC. You will continue to see the goalpost shift. There is no problem whatsoever with our party. A party controlling 31 states cannot be scared of a party that does not control one state,” Governor Sule declared with confidence.

Opposition Parties and the Shifting Narrative

The governor’s comments come as political analysts and opposition figures continue to speculate about which party poses the greatest challenge to the APC’s dominance. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which once held power at the federal level for 16 years, has struggled to reclaim its footing since losing in 2015. Now, some voices are touting the ADC as a rising alternative.

But for Governor Sule, this is simply part of the usual pre-election noise. He dismissed the idea that any opposition party—whether PDP or ADC—currently has the structure, reach, or grassroots support to seriously rival the APC, especially given the ruling party’s overwhelming control of state governments across the country.

State Policing: A Solution to Nigeria’s Security Crisis?

Beyond party politics, Governor Sule also weighed in on one of Nigeria’s most pressing concerns: insecurity. From banditry in the North-West to terrorism in the North-East and kidnapping in various parts of the country, Nigerians have been crying out for lasting solutions.

Governor Sule strongly advocated for state policing as the way forward. According to him, there is broad consensus among state governors on the need for this reform.

“When we discussed it at the National Economic Council (NEC) level, about 35 out of 37 governors supported state policing. We agreed to move forward. It involves amending laws, going through the National Assembly, and securing approval from state assemblies. The process may take time, but there is strong belief in it across states, and Nasarawa is fully in support,” he explained.

The push for state policing has been a recurring debate in Nigeria for years. Supporters argue that governors, who are constitutionally recognized as chief security officers of their states, should have control over their own police forces to better tackle localized security challenges. Critics, however, worry about potential abuse of power and the risk of state police being used for political witch-hunts.

Still, with the level of support Governor Sule described, it appears momentum is building toward making state policing a reality—provided the necessary constitutional amendments can pass through the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.

What This Means for 2027

As Nigeria gradually shifts its focus toward the 2027 elections, statements like Governor Sule’s reveal the confidence—some might say overconfidence—of the ruling party. The APC’s dominance at the state level is undeniable, but Nigerian politics has proven time and again that fortunes can change quickly.

The ADC may not control any state today, but opposition parties have historically used federal elections as platforms to spring surprises. Whether the ADC or any other party can mount a serious challenge will depend on their ability to build alliances, present credible candidates, and offer Nigerians a compelling alternative.

For now, Governor Sule and the APC remain unbothered. But as any seasoned political observer knows, in Nigerian politics, anything can happen.
